Western Australia - ASEAN Trade and Investment Dialogue: The Power of Proximity - Dato’ Praba’s keynote
Kuala Lumpur, 17 June 2019 – Dato’ Praba Thiagarajah, Group CEO of Basis Bay was invited to deliver a keynote address to the digital and technology plenary session at the Western Australia - ASEAN Trade and Investment Dialogue from 14-16 November 2018.
Hosted by the Perth USAsia Centre and the Government of Western Australia, the dialogue aimed to bring together the country’s public and private sectors to collaborate with key business leaders from the ASEAN region.
“The ASEAN community is rapidly becoming a critical and influential bloc in global economics. The opportunities to collaborate for mutual benefit for ASEAN and Western Australia business community are significant. This trade dialogue and mission provided an ideal platform for key players from both regions to compare notes, showcase capabilities and engage in deeper collaboration,” explained Dato’ Praba Thiagarajah, Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Basis Bay Group.
The dialogue brought together Western Australian government and business communities with influential Southeast Asian leaders to encourage partnerships, exchange and collaboration.
As ASEAN powers forward, as one of the world’s engines of growth, and with its economies developing rapidly, the benefits for partnering with ASEAN by refocusing Western Australia’s perspectives on ASEAN as a trade and investment partner are obvious.
With a special focus on key growth economies of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, the dialogue explored how Western Australia and ASEAN can continue building a lasting economic partnership, through opportunities in mining and agriculture and specifically information technology.
Dato’ Praba presented on ASEAN’s digital revolution, the core driver of the region’s burgeoning growth in e-retail, commerce, telecommunications and sustained manufacturing. He expounded on how the digital revolution enabled through widespread connectivity, cloud adoption and digital mobility has re-shaped communities and introduced a new set of digital norms and guidelines.
“Across the world, digital products and services are transforming industries, enriching lives, and enabling progress. However, it is vitally important to ensure we are responsible to our stakeholders – not just shareholders, but to customers, employees and the community at large,” explained Dato’ Praba.
ASEAN represents a growing and potentially profitable market for Western Australia. With a rapidly developing middle-class, increasingly urbanised population, ASEAN is ideally positioned for engagement with Western Australia, leading to mutual economic and job-creating opportunities.
